The topic of royalties has always been a hot issue whenever it comes up. This time it has caught up with R&B singer Omarion and songwriter Kai Holmes. The whole situation started off when Kai Holmes stepped into the studio with a rapper by the name of Cyse and created a record by the name of "Speedin". Almost a year later Omarion walks into the studio and used a the hook portion of Cyse's "Speedin" track without notification. It looks like Omarion might have not known about this whole "stealing" situation when recording his track, but none the less.. this royalty battle is one that Omarion must pay close attention to.
What took so long to actually get all the legal action going?
Well that particular part of it I'm going to leave personal. We did that record about a year ago and was originally done as a Hip-Hop record. However the hook is what's getting most of my attention.
How did you get introduced to Omarion's version?
Pretty much, about three weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to check out Omarion's new record and sends me the link. I was like "OK! This is kinda nice! I'm really feeling this record!" And I get to the hook.. and now I'm like "What The Hell!?" *laughs* ... In the heat of the moment I felt infuriated. They didn't even change the original title! So now I'm wondering how did this actually happen? It was just so blatant because there is no way in the world that they got the same title, the same hook, the same melody structure without hearing my original song. When you hear both versions it's immediate! I'm assuming someone is going to deny it...
Did the producer at least get credit for it?
From what I've been told, "253" produced the track. I sent one of the producers a little message but they havn't replied yet. I'm just trying to find out what's going on! Maybe there's a misunderstanding which I wouldn't understand how that would happen. I'm not the type of person to go through lawyers.. I would rather have two men talk it out.
Ok so you are claiming that you co-wrote the record?
Well I wrote my version of the record a year ago. The verses from Omarion's "Speedin" record has nothing to do with me. I'm only worried about my hook. It pretty bothersome.
Have you tried to contact Omarion?
Kai - From what I've been told Omarion knows about the situation. We are just waiting for the next step. Right now, its just us slinging acquisations.
