Award Winning Producer of The Year "SteffNasty" (from the production team "BeatBanggahz") catches up with TheNext2Shine and discusses a few of the life-lessons that he has learned while coming up within the music industry.
You're from NY, You've worked with many artists including Trey Songz, Gordon Chambers, Raekwon, J Holiday just to name a few. Who are some that you would want to work with?
I’d actually love to work with Jazmin Sullivan, Usher, Faith Evans, Ne-Yo, The-Dream, Kanye West, 50 Cent they are just a few.
So Gran Turismo 3, You got on the soundtrack, How did that come about and what song was that?
The song is called "Determination" by Raekwon and it came about through my connections with my partners. The people that were working on the soundtrack (Sony Records) said that they needed music. My partner and I then worked on a record and sent it to them and they loved it!
Can you describe some on to the job experiences you’ve had that either you learned a valuable lesson from or showed great leadership?
I would say one situation was with Gordon Chambers who is an award Grammy writer, being a fan of his work automatically is like where your put in a situation where you almost want to take his direction. He’s done alot more, been around alot longer but tis the situation where he has called you in for a job because of my expertise in what I’m doing and what my partner does. So it’s like, produce a record then he would ask How does it sound? I said I don’t know what do you think? Your Gordon Chambers! Steff didn’t you just produce this record?! Instead of being a fan and I should be listening to him its a situation where he has trusted me, knowing that I am capable of doing my job well and whatever I said he will do! So that’s when I actually had to be a leader and use my experience.
How does it feel knowing that you have helped and worked with many artists who are successful today?
It feels great, To be apart of so many people's career, from the beginning of their career, towards the middle of someone's career or to the end, it ranges, It almost feels like in a sense I am able to validate people. It feels good to know that I have that kind of affect and power.
Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?
I would love to work with Brandy, Tess Henley, KQuick of GrandStaff, The Young Fellaz, Brian Michael Cox, Timbaland and Kanye West!
Through out your years within the industry, who has inspired you the most and why?
There are so many people that have inspired me for different reasons, I can't give you one name. If I had to choose, I'll have to say is Brian-Michael Cox, to be a talented musician the way he is and to have the kind of success he has had in this industry, making the music that he makes, to me is inspiring. He reminds me of myself as far as the music is about, Brian is very musical and he doesn't hold back, he's successful doing that. Kanye is another one who doesn't hold back his creativity and that inspires me. There's alot of people that inspire me I can't name them all.
What is the most difficult production problem you've ever faced and how did you deal with it?
I was working with an artist this one time and they didn't like to take direction, they wanted to produce the record themselves, It became really frustrating because me doing my job and trying to help and tell them what I want and what kind of vocal I am looking for, they were telling me what it should be like and questioning everything that I was doing. So I was diplomatic and tried it out their way but then it doesn't work most of the times. It kind of slows down the proccess when the artist challenges you! The last thing you don't want is the artist feeling uncomfortable recording the track and its not working the way that they want. This whole industry is based on relationships!
How do you feel being under the spotlight?
I love the spotlight baby! It's one thing to be a creator of music but to be recognized for what you're doing, it feels even better, its gratifying! I like getting recognition for the work that I do!
How did you come about with Troy Taylor?
I met Troy at his studio through a mutual friend who I went to high school with, Troy use to have a company called "The Characters" and they worked on Boyz II Men, Tyrese, 702, Whitney Houston and all these different artist. He heard my demo's and he began to mentor me as a teenager.
Do you have any artists on the come up of your own?
Yes I do, I have been working with a female artist for about a month but I can't get into details, all I can say is that she is sweet. I can mention a group that I am working with "The Commission"
